Napa Cellars Reserve Collection Pinot Noir 2016
August 26 – September 7, 2016
T.A.: 0.48 g / 100ml
19 months, 100% French oak (41% new)
This Pinot Noir opens with aromas of black cherry, dark plum, crushed berries, graham cracker, spicy oak with hints of earthiness forest floor and light mushroom. With its fruit forward, viscous palate, soft entry and fine-grained tannins, this wine delivers decadent flavors of red fruits, cherry and warm spicy tones, almonds, toffee, cola and mocha. This wine concludes with spiced fruit compote and a lengthy oak finish. This is a complex, yet food friendly, wine.
The grapes for our 2016 Reserve Collection Pinot Noir came from the Moretti and Mueller vineyards in Carneros. Mueller Vineyard, nestled at the southern end of the appellation near the Sonoma border, is a flat vineyard with characteristics typical of the region: thin clay soils, frequent wind and significant cloud cover. Moretti Vineyard is on a mild slope with clay-loam soils. Both sites provide ideal conditions for a deliberate and controlled ripening period for Pinot Noir fruit, creating balanced, structured wines with intensity and complexity.
The 2016 growing season in Napa Valley started out with unseasonably warm temperatures, though welcomed rains occurred in the late winter and early spring after years of drought. Bud break was early, however slowed with April showers leading to a harvest that was still early, though with a heavier crop than the 2015 vintage.
